Jessica & Tarus Maternity Session
I hadn’t seen Tarus in a while. There had been a time when we were working together a lot - producing barbering videos for his barbering business. But COVID hit and a lot of that production came to a halt. Turns out that he had been busy with other things… like having a baby! We set up a day and time to shoot and met up to produce some great maternity photos with him and Jessica. We had planned to do a mix of studio shots as well as outdoor photos at the beach, but plans had to change every so slightly.
We pulled up to the beach parking lot, but saw that the actual beachfront was a pretty long walk away. It would have been too much to ask of Jessica so we decided to just shoot in the area leading up to the beach. It was actually a very nice location that provided some great tones for photos. Sometimes you have to just go with what works best for everyone, and for us, it made the most sense to ditch the beach idea. In the end we still were able to get excellent pictures from the session.
I brought two prime lenses that I used for the entire session. The first was my trusty Sony 85mm G-master lens. It’s a fantastic lens that provides vivid and stunning images. The other was a lens that I very rarely bring out for use. It was the Zeiss 50mm 1.8 prime. This prime lens was the sharpest you could get when the A7 series was in its infancy. It is still a great lens, but I prefer many other lenses to it as I’m not a huge fan of the 50mm focal length. So why did I decide to use it? Well, I knew it would be extremely bright outside, and it is one of the only lenses that I have a polarizing filter on - so I went with it!
We shot during the perfect time of day - right at 6pm. The sun provided a gorgeous golden light for us and we were able to shoot in shade. Shooting in shade is so key because not only is it out of the harsh heat of the sun, it also helps with getting even skin tones.
Back in the studio I had had Jessica and Tarus shoot in front of a white backdrop that I set up. The studio lights were set up and we took numerous photos with different poses. These shots have a totally different look and feel compared to those we took outside. Tarus wanted to have both looks and I was more than happy to oblige!
It was awesome getting back together with Tarus to shoot this special moment in his and Jessica’s life. If you’re looking for any kind of maternity photography, please let me know and we’ll set up a day and time to create some beautiful images together!
