Two Becomes Three!

Newborn photography is something that I absolutely love capturing. When a baby is brand new to the family, especially a first born, the excitement that is surrounding the home is simply amazing. The new parents are so careful with their precious child and I feel completely honored to be asked to come in and take photos that will capture this precious once-in-a-lifetime period of their lives. Just last week I had this opportunity with Laura and her newborn. She had been in contact with me before the baby’s birth and we were playing this session by ear. Thankfully all the scheduling worked out perfectly. Laura had her baby and shortly after I was able to come in and take photos of her new baby boy.

For in-home sessions I bring all the equipment necessary to produce some great shots. In this case bringing some lighting was key in order to get that super clear look. You never know what kind of light to expect when going into a home so having lighting with you is a must. For my lighting I use a very simple off-camera set up with a trigger on the camera and a flash gun mounted on a stand. This lets me move the light very easily to whatever place I need it to be without any wires to get in the way. It’s an elegant and easy set-up that lets me shoot pretty much hassle-free.

Though I have the lighting with me, I often tell my clients that I’ll stop using it for a little bit to capture some photos with natural light. Natural light photos look very different than photos taken with flash, so you get a completely different feel. Sometimes the difference is so dramatic that the pictures don’t even look like they came from the same session. With Laura, I decided to capture more of the detailed shots with natural light. The look is a lot softer and more intimate. I asked Laura to simply interact with her son and I took the opportunity to find some beautiful interactions.

It was amazing spending the time with Laura and her family. The shoot went very smoothly and we were able to capture many photos that I think she’s treasure as her son grows up. Newborn sessions can take place in-home or outdoors. If you’d like photos to remember this precious time, contact me and we’ll schedule a session!
